About the work

Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim Vanda draws inspiration from , the first registered plant hybrid from Singapore and now the nation’s floral emblem. Discovered in the 1890s by horticulturist Agnes Joaquim, the orchid is a cross between Papilionanthe teres and Papilionanthe hookeriana. Celebrated for its resilience and year-round blooming, it was named Singapore’s national flower in 1981. Kumari's sculpture captures this enduring legacy—of heritage, hybridity, and a bloom that speaks to national identity
