This sculpture of a rubber seed by Kumari
Nahappan honours Singapore’s role in the
global rubber trade. The seed references
the 1877 arrival of rubber seedlings from
Kew Gardens, which catalysed Southeast
Asia’s rubber boom. Pioneered by botanist
H. N. Ridley, the crop transformed the
region’s economy. Enlarged and enshrined,
the seed becomes a metaphor for growth,
persistence, and the quiet revolutions that
take root in unexpected places.
