About the work

This is a portrait of a Charolais calf standing in an imagined landscape under the shade of ginkgo trees. Ginkgo trees are common and much loved in Japan and China for many reasons, including the unique shape of their leaves and their colour: lime green in summer; brilliant yellow in autumn. In Japan, ginkgo nuts are gathered and cooked as a delicacy in the country’s cuisine. The ginkgo leaf itself is the symbol of Tokyo, where Alice was born and spent many years as a child.
