Art is a profound irony in my life. It is the work I love most, yet at the same time, it is an utterly unpredictable livelihood.

ABOUT: Bongsang Yoo

Bongsang Yoo is a contemporary artist whose practice centres on time, repetition, and the quiet discipline of making. Working meticulously with thousands of pins, he constructs images through an exacting process where light, shadow, and depth are shaped millimetre by millimetre. His works are not revised or corrected once begun; they demand total commitment from the first strike to the last.

Bongsang Yoo’s relationship with art developed early. Recognition through art competitions during his formative years affirmed a path he would later commit to fully through formal art education. What began as encouragement gradually became conviction, leading him to dedicate his life to an artistic practice that values endurance over immediacy.

For the artist, art exists in a state of tension—between spiritual fulfilment and material uncertainty. It is both deeply personal and relentlessly demanding. This duality informs his work, where the meditative rhythm of repetition meets the physical strain of execution. Each pin is driven by hand, transforming contemplation into action. In this process, Bongsang Yoo has learned that thought alone is insufficient; meaning emerges only through sustained effort.

Rather than pursuing grand declarations, Bongsang Yoo focuses on incremental growth. His ambition is precise and continuous: to make each work marginally better than the last. With every pin placed, he refines his understanding of shade, depth, and atmosphere, pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved within a narrow physical range.

Inspiration for Bongsang Yoo is omnipresent. It may come from the changing colour of the sky, sunlight brushing against leaves, urban fire escapes, fleeting gestures, or intimate everyday moments. Nature is not treated as a singular subject but as one of many sources of atmosphere. While certain bodies of work may focus on specific environments, his practice remains open—responding to whatever visual tension or quiet pull captures his attention in the moment.

Through patience and persistence, Bongsang Yoo’s works invite viewers into a slowed-down space—one shaped by labour, restraint, and an unwavering dedication to process.
